The sailing part of this exped falls into two distinct categories: two ocean passages, travelling from Wisbech to the Norwegian coast - along the coast to the Lofotens and then to the base camp at Gratangen and then another ocean passage in reverse, each taking around two weeks. Inbetween these two journeys, there were two coastal serials of five days duration - each exploring the neighbouring coast, one went south to Svolvær whilst the other went north to Tromsø. All passages enabling the cadets the experience life on board an ocean going yacht, carrying out watch duties which cover the whole gamut of sailing: navigation (esp pilotage), helming, deck work, cooking and general ship's duties. All passages gave opportunities for cadets to accomplish Competent Crew and the ocean passages may give rise to some Watch Leader certificates. The scenary in these latitudes is simply stunning and the 24hr daylight enabled the yacht to cruise around the clock with ease. They generally planned to sail during the "night" and then arrive somewhere of interest to explore during the daytime - when things are still open. Ian Newton, the yacht's skipper, has written up "ship's logs" on his laptop in situ : Adjacent are some views of the charter yacht, Capella Endeavour, see the Faroes98 website for a full description and photo gallery, plus the recent Tall Ships pages. The reports pages (esp 24 th & 25th July) carry more detailed news and photos, any further items will be added here later. | |
